Leeds UFCA assistant manager Simon Wood has praised the progression of the squad, as they prepare to kick off their debut campaign in NCEL Division One with a tough test against Route One Rovers on Saturday afternoon.

Following a productive pre-season, Wood believes the team are well-prepared for the challenges ahead, having shown encouraging signs both on and off the pitch.

“Overall, it’s been a really positive pre-season campaign,” said Wood. “Of course, we always want to win, but pre-season is first and foremost about preparing the players for the season ahead, and I feel we’ve done that well.

“We’ve been competitive in every game, even against established non-league sides, which has been encouraging. The players’ fitness levels have definitely improved - they’re looking sharper. We’ve scored goals, created plenty of chances, and most importantly, the group is really starting to gel.”

As the club prepares to make the step up to semi-professional football, the mood in the UFCA dressing room is one of excitement and quiet confidence.

“There’s a real sense of anticipation now. Everyone just wants to get going and embrace the challenge of that first league game,” Wood continued.

“From what I’ve seen, I’m confident the lads are more than capable of stepping up. They’re a young group, so we expect some tough moments along the way, but they’re resilient, hardworking, and very talented. If we stay true to our principles and stick together, I’m sure we’ll adapt quickly and find our feet at this level.”

The opening fixture will see UFCA face a Route One Rovers side who, despite a move across divisions, bring with them valuable experience and quality at this level.

“Route One Rovers will be a strong test for us,” Wood added. “They’re already an established non-league side with good experience. They’ve recruited well over the summer, bringing in some quality players, so we’re expecting a well-organised, competitive team who will want to make their mark early in the season.

“We’ll need to be fully focused and match their intensity and physicality from the very first whistle. It’s exactly the kind of challenge we want to start with - a tough opponent, a new level, and something for the lads to really get stuck into. With the relatively short distance between us, you could argue it’s our first local derby at this level, which adds even more excitement.”

Wood also spoke of the pride within the club at providing a clear pathway for young players to transition from the academy into senior non-league football.

“It’s incredibly exciting - not just for the young lads, but for the whole club. To go from our academy setup into senior non-league football is a massive step, and not many clubs at this level offer that opportunity.

“For our scholars especially, it shows there’s a genuine pathway here. If they work hard and apply themselves, they’ll get chances to develop, earn minutes, and play men’s football in a proper competitive environment. That’s what this club is all about - developing young talent and giving them a stage to prove themselves.”
