Coach Isaiah Rankin remained optimistic despite Leeds UFCA's opening day defeat to Route One Rovers - acknowledging both the positives and the key areas the young squad must sharpen up as they adjust to life in NCEL Division One.

Reflecting on the performance, Rankin was quick to highlight the quality in possession - but admitted there’s work to be done on the defensive side of the game.

“There were definitely positives we can take from the game,” said Rankin. “I thought the boys were very good in possession. We moved the ball well and created some good moments, but ultimately, games are won and lost in both boxes.

“That’s the area we need to improve on now - our organisation when we don’t have the ball and being more clinical at both ends. Today, they took their chances, and we didn’t take ours. It’s as simple as that.”

With a quick turnaround before Leeds UFCA's next fixture, Rankin emphasised the need for his players to adapt fast and learn from the experience.

“We go again on Wednesday. This is all part of the learning curve for the group, but we’ve got to learn quickly now,” he continued.

“It’s a step up, and with that comes higher demands. We have to be sharper, more switched on in key moments, and make sure we’re competing properly in both boxes.”

Despite the result, Rankin praised the efforts of the club’s young scholars who were given an opportunity to experience senior non-league football, underlining the importance of their development.

“It’s a great opportunity for the young lads who have stepped up and been part of the squad today. That’s a big part of what we do at this club - giving these scholars a real pathway,” Rankin added.

“But now we’re at this level, it’s a different kind of challenge. We’ll learn quickly. We’ll reflect, improve - and go again. That’s the mentality we need to adopt.”
